Setting Your Thermostat While You’re Away
The temperatures are warming up in Woodbridge, Virginia. That means it’s almost time to turn your AC system on. Everybody’s interested in saving money these days. One of the easiest ways to save money on your monthly electric bill is to properly set your thermostat while you’re away from home. Here’s how to do that:
Set a Comfortable Baseline
You’ll want to determine what your temperature preference is while you’re home. Keep in mind that the recommended temperatures are 78 degrees in the summer and 68 in the winter. Once you set your baseline, you can take a few simple steps to start saving some money.
Set a 10 to 15 Degree Variance When You Leave
Recent studies have estimated that for every degree you set your thermostat over 78 during the summer and under 68 in winter months, you’ll save an average of up to eight percent on your monthly electric bill. You can save a lot of money by setting your thermostat 10 to 15 degrees lower than your baseline during the winter and higher during the summer. This can be even more effective if you set your thermostat when you leave for work every day.
Take Advantage Programmable Thermostats
Newer thermostats allow you to set a schedule for automatic temperature adjustments. That way, you can remove the need to constantly remember to set your thermostat. Some modern thermostats even offer the ability to automatically switch over to power-saving modes when they detect you’ve left your home.
One thing you should never do is turn your heating and air conditioning unit off completely. With the warmer summer months coming up, the last thing you want is to come home to an extremely hot home.
